Doha: HE Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani, highlighted that the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD), scheduled for November 4 – 6 in Doha, is set to renew global commitments to the principles established in Copenhagen and advance sustainable social development. The summit aims to tackle the pressing challenges and changes influencing the world today.
According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency emphasized that this event follows the First World Summit for Social Development held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1995, which was a significant moment in international efforts to combat poverty, reduce unemployment, and enhance social cohesion.
Sheikha Hanouf detailed that the upcoming summit will serve as a platform for countries and international and regional organizations to exchange experiences and coordinate efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals as outlined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The summit is expected to address critical issues such as poverty reduction, empowerment of women and youth, strengthening social protection systems, supporting rural communities, and building capacities for inclusive and sustainable development.
She noted that Qatar’s role in hosting the summit underscores its prominent position on the global stage and its commitment to multilateral cooperation in tackling social and economic challenges. This commitment is particularly crucial in light of rapid global transformations and the need for social justice, equal opportunities, and enabling marginalized groups to participate effectively in development efforts. Qatar’s dedication to supporting international sustainable development initiatives reflects its focus on human development as a primary goal.
She further elaborated that the Department of International Organizations is actively collaborating with relevant national entities to ensure the summit’s success and to achieve meaningful outcomes that shape new visions for social development regionally and internationally. This aligns with Qatar’s constructive role in advancing human development initiatives and promoting global dialogue on justice and equality issues.
HE Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani expressed Qatar’s conviction that social development is achievable through investments in human capital, fostering values of justice and solidarity, and supporting initiatives that enhance international cooperation. She anticipates broad participation in the summit, which will contribute to its success and strengthen Doha’s status as a hub for dialogue and international partnership in sustainable social development.
Her Excellency also conveyed gratitude to national and international partners for their cooperation in preparing for the summit, highlighting her expectation for active participation that will solidify the summit’s success.
