Brussels: The Belgian Ministry of Defense announced Sunday the launch of an official investigation into drone flights over a military base on two consecutive nights. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken stated on the X platform that what was observed on Saturday night was “not a routine flight, but a clear mission targeting the base,” noting that larger drones were spotted at higher altitudes.
According to Qatar News Agency, Francken added that “a police helicopter and patrol vehicles pursued one of the drones but lost track of it,” confirming that authorities have opened a formal inquiry. He emphasized that the law “strictly prohibits drone flights over military sites,” and stressed that the Ministry of Defense must do everything it can to bring down these drones.
Drone activity was recorded on Friday and Saturday nights over the Kleine Brogel bases in northern Belgium. Similar drone sightings were reported in early October over the Elsenborn base near the German border. The European Union is currently working toward establishing an “anti-drone wall” by 2027 in response to the growing number of such incidents.
