Earthquake of 5 Magnitude Hits Southern Papua New Guinea

Lae: An earthquake measuring 5 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the city of Lae, south of Papua New Guinea.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said in a statement that the epicenter of the earthquake took place 57 kilometers south of Lae, noting that no casualties or material damage due to the quake have been reported so far.

Papua New Guinea is located on the so-called Ring of Fire, a region that extends along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by high earthquake and volcanic activity. This region includes 90 percent of the world's active volcanoes.
