Cairo: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Thursday with his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afwerki, who is on a visit to Egypt, to discuss developments in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, and Red Sea security.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Egyptian Presidency reported that the two presidents “affirmed the convergence of views between the two countries on ways to end the war in Sudan,” emphasizing the need to support national state institutions, particularly the Sudanese Armed Forces.
In this context, the Egyptian President highlighted his country’s efforts within the framework of the Quartet Mechanism to end the war and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Sudanese people, reiterating Egypt’s commitment to working with its partners to ensure Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty.
Regarding the latest developments in Somalia, the two presidents emphasized their countries’ commitment to the Joint Trilateral Statement issued during the Summit between the leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia in Asmara, October 2024. This statement underscored the necessity of respecting the fundamental principles of international law, foremost among them the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Somalia and all countries in the region.
The two leaders also highlighted the importance of coordinating joint efforts to achieve regional stability and strengthen the capabilities of Somali state institutions to confront internal and external challenges.
With regard to Red Sea security, both sides reiterated the importance of enhancing joint cooperation to ensure the unimpeded flow of navigation in this vital waterway. The Egyptian president stressed the need to intensify coordination between Egypt and Eritrea, as well as with other neighboring Arab and African states, to contribute to consolidating security and stability in this important region.
