German Defense Minister Defends Military Service Reform to Boost National Security

Berlin: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reaffirmed his push for a new military service model, calling it essential for national security and defense readiness.

According to Qatar News Agency, speaking before the German Federal Council (Bundesrat), Pistorius, a member of the Social Democratic Party, emphasized that the plan aims to strengthen Germany’s defensive capabilities without threatening others. He warned of a real threat situation facing Germany, Europe, and NATO, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of seeking to destabilize European states.

The ruling coalition, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats, presented a draft reform to the German parliament (Bundestag), sparking internal debate, particularly over mandatory screening for young men and the shortage of volunteers. Pistorius stressed the need to identify qualified individuals for emergency defense roles, clarifying that the goal is preparedness, not escalation. Some coalition members proposed a randomized selection process, calling up only a portion of youth for service when needed.

While open to alternatives, Pistorius insisted that Germany’s military operational strength must remain a priority. He noted that not all conscripts would serve in combat roles, and that stronger human and material resources enhance deterrence. He reiterated his call for parliamentary support and expressed willingness to reach consensus. During the initial debate, Pistorius proposed screening all individuals born in a specific year, while remaining open to other suggestions.

He concluded that compulsory conscription would only be enacted through a clear parliamentary mandate under defined conditions.
