Beirut: Lebanese President Michel Aoun stated that his country places great hopes on the work of the Committee for Supervising Cessation of Hostilities, emphasizing its role in preventing unacceptable Israeli attacks, pressuring Israeli entity to withdraw from occupied territories, and helping restore stability to southern regions.
According to Qatar News Agency, during a meeting on Thursday with the committee’s new head, United States General Joseph Clearfield, Aoun affirmed Lebanon’s commitment to implementing all security measures adopted by Lebanese Armed Forces, stressing that neither the residents of the south nor Lebanon as a whole wish to return to a state of war.
For his part, General Clearfield indicated that the committee’s meetings will be held regularly to work toward consolidating the ceasefire in the south.
The ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon came into effect on November 27, 2024, stipulating the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from border villages and towns within 60 days. The Lebanese government later agreed to extend the deadline until February 18; however, Israeli occupation forces remain in five locations and continue to commit violations.
