Mount Ibu on Indonesia’s Maluku Island Erupts

Jakarta, Mount Ibu on Halmahera Island, North Maluku of Indonesia experienced an eruption on Wednesday, Indonesian authorities said.

Mount Ibu, with a height of 1,325 meters above sea level, spewed ash nearly 2,000 meters above its peak, according to Indonesia’s News Agency (ANTARA).

People around the mountain, including tourists, are advised to not conduct activities within a 2 km radius and a sectoral extension of up to 3.5 km towards the crater in the northern part of the active crater, Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) said.

About 130 volcanoes are active in Indonesia, due to its location on the so-called ‘ring of fire,’ a belt of tectonic plate boundaries that revolves around the Pacific Ocean and causes frequent seismic activity.
