OpenAI Launches AI-Powered Browser ‘Atlas’ to Compete with Google’s Chrome

San francisco: OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced today the launch of a new AI-powered web browser called Atlas, in a move aimed at competing with Google’s Chrome. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, described the new product as “an AI-powered web browser built on ChatGPT.”

According to Qatar News Agency, the launch comes as part of OpenAI’s broader efforts to strengthen its competitive position, while Google continues to rapidly integrate artificial intelligence into its platforms-particularly Chrome, which has over 3 billion users worldwide. Google has already begun embedding features based on its Gemini AI model.

OpenAI said the new browser is designed to transform ChatGPT from a chatbot into a central hub for online search, potentially boosting traffic and generating revenue through digital advertising.

Among the features of Atlas is an Agent Mode, which allows the browser to navigate the web and complete tasks on behalf of the user, using their search history and interests, all while explaining each step of the process.

Atlas also includes a collapsible sidebar tool that can be opened on any webpage to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data directly from websites.

The browser is currently available globally on Apple Mac devices, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android expected soon.
