UN Fact-Finding Mission Warns of Escalation of War in Sudan

Geneva: The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan warned of an escalation of the war in the country, leading to deadly consequences for countless civilians caught up in the conflict.

According to Qatar News Agency, in its report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the mission stated that it documented an increase in the use of heavy weapons in populated areas, noting that humanitarian aid is being used as a weapon, and that hospitals and medical facilities are under siege.

Member of the Fact-Finding Mission Mona Rishmawi said that what began as a political and security crisis has become a grave human rights and protection emergency, noting that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the escalating violence and clashes in Sudan.

Armed conflict in Sudan has been ongoing between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 20,000 people and the displacement of approximately 14 million others, according to local and UN reports.
