UN Renews Call to Lift Siege on El Fasher, Ensure Safe Passage for Civilians

Doha: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that fighting in El Fasher, the besieged capital of Sudan’s North Darfur State, continues to drive people from their homes, expressing grave concern over worsening conditions in and around the city, which is besieged by the Rapid Support Forces. The UN and its partners stand ready to deliver life-saving assistance once access to El Fasher is granted, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, adding “At the same time, we continue to press for increased UN presence on the ground in north Darfur and all areas of need.”

According to Qatar News Agency, the UN has reiterated its call for the lifting of the siege on El Fasher, emphasizing the urgent need for civilian protection and safe passage for those attempting to flee the conflict. The UN stresses the necessity of unimpeded humanitarian access to assist the hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in the city for over 500 days.

The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, has led to a significant displacement crisis. Over 12 million people have been forced to abandon their homes, marking it as the largest displacement crisis globally. The UN continues to advocate for a resolution to the ongoing siege and the provision of essential aid to those affected by the conflict.
