Post: 3 Million Stranded as Flood Hits East Bangladesh, Say Authorities

The Bangladeshi government announced today that about three million people are stranded due to floods that hit the east of the country. The authorities stated that rescue workers have, over the past three days, evacuated about 75,000 people to safety, out of a total of 2.9 million people affected by the floods caused by heavy rains and water flowing from mountainous areas upstream. They confirmed the death of two people due to the floods, while floodwaters submerged homes, agricultural lands, roads and vast areas in the east of the country, adding that train services between the capital Dhaka and the coastal city of Chattogram were suspended, as many parts of the railway lines were submerged. In addition, the Bangladesh Meteorological Office said that the main rivers in the northeastern and eastern regions of Bangladesh continue to rise, expecting the rains to recede by tomorrow morning, Friday, while some areas are still witnessing heavy rains.
