According to Qatar News Agency, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics (BMKG) reported that the quake occurred 59 km from the city of Padang, at a depth of 88 km.
The tremor follows a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the same province a day earlier. No casualties or material damage have been reported from either incident so far.
Indonesia is prone to frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a massive tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people.
