Sulawesi: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi Island early Wednesday morning. The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers off the northern coast of Sulawesi province, with no immediate reports of casualties or material damage.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency announced that the earthquake's magnitude was 6.0, stressing at the same time that there was no risk of a tsunami.
In January 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed over 100 people in Indonesia. In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, triggering a tsunami that claimed the lives of 220,000 people across the region, including around 170,000 in Indonesia.
Earthquakes regularly hit various parts of Indonesia, as the country lies on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' where many tectonic plates meet, leading to frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
