Manama: The convening of the 46th GCC Summit in the Kingdom of Bahrain comes at an exceptionally sensitive regional juncture, as the Middle East witnesses heightened political and security developments amid global transformations that are reshaping power balances and alliances, analysts told Qatar News Agency (QNA).
According to Qatar News Agency, experts emphasized that the State of Qatar's participation in the summit reflects its unflagging commitment to backing the Gulf Cooperation Council's pathway and bolstering regional cooperation to achieve shared stability and prosperity among member states. Professor in Public Policy at Qatar Foundation's Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Dr. Sultan Barakat, stated that Qatar's presence at the summit in the Kingdom of Bahrain is not merely a ceremonial attendance, but a clear message that it remains committed to strengthening the Gulf house, enhancing cohesion, and solidifying the principles of partnership and shared responsibility.
This high-level participation underscores Qatar's enduring policy pillars, grounded in unwavering support for the GCC as the unifying framework for Gulf states and peoples, the fundamental anchor for political, economic, and security stability in the region, and a testament to the importance of direct consultation among leaders, particularly amid accelerating regional and global developments, Dr. Barakat underlined. He warned that the summit convenes amid unprecedented regional menaces, including persistent attempts at extermination and displacement in Gaza, tensions between Israel and Iran, and prior hostilities, cautioning that such threats directly and indirectly imperil Gulf and regional security.
Gulf solidarity has become indispensable and joint action has become increasingly evident. GCC states have demonstrated clearly that any threat to one member is a threat to all, reinforcing the Council's standing as a unified political and defense apparatus, he outlined. Dr. Barakat further emphasized that the unity of Gulf destiny and shared security was exemplified by the official and popular Gulf solidarity following the Israeli assault on Doha on Sept. 9, underscoring that no Gulf state is immune to the security consequences of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, even as a mediator.
For his part, political analyst Dr. Khalid Waleed Mahmoud emphasized that the summit takes place at an extraordinarily sensitive regional moment, as the Middle East experiences a surge of political and security developments spanning Gaza to the Gulf, amid global shifts redefining power dynamics and alliances, with ramifications for energy security and global economic stability. He noted that the summit holds exceptional strategic importance, not merely as a routine meeting but as a critical platform for recalibrating Gulf priorities, confirming the GCC's ability to operate as a unified entity with a shared vision in addressing challenges.
Dr. Mahmoud further elaborated that the summit agenda encompasses an array of vital issues central to the security, stability, and development of the region. Foremost among them is the Gaza situation, including its humanitarian and political dimensions, the need to support ceasefire efforts, protect civilians, and restore the political path, alongside issues related to regional security, particularly maintaining Gulf stability and safeguarding energy flows and trade routes amid rapid international developments.
On the economic front, Dr. Mahmoud highlighted that the summit will address the future of energy markets, economic diversification policies, and measures to enhance the efficiency and resilience of Gulf economies against global volatility, in addition to other prominent initiatives related to Gulf integration projects, including completion of the common market, the customs union, strengthening food and water security, and advancing digital infrastructure, key levers for reinforcing economic resilience and competitiveness of GCC states.
For his part, Professor of Broadcast at Qatar University Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Shami told QNA that the State of Qatar is known at the Arab and international levels for its support of all efforts aimed at strengthening solidarity and integration at all Arab and international levels, which enhances security, spreads understanding, and helps achieve Arab and international peace. In this context, he said that what testifies to this is the mediation efforts in which it is active at all levels, so what about when it comes to the GCC, which represents the natural incubator for the countries that fall under the umbrella of this system.
Those analysts agree that the State of Qatar's participation in the sessions of the GCC Supreme Council (Gulf Summits) confirms the keenness of the state, leadership and people, to strengthen and activate joint Gulf action, and to support the council's journey since its establishment in 1981, to achieve the aspirations of the Gulf peoples for stability, development and prosperity, and security and peace in the region in general. This is a true translation, in word and deed, of Qatar's stances that have always supported its brothers in the GCC countries and its Arab nation, which were emphasized by its permanent constitution, the principles of its foreign policy and its national vision, especially at this time when the world is witnessing blocs and sharp polarization, wars, conflicts and many rapid changes, and the resulting regional and international repercussions that are extremely delicate and sensitive.
