Post: Arab League and UN Envoy Discuss Libya’s Political Process

Doha:According to Qatar News Agency, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy, met with Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya. Their discussions focused on the latest political and security developments in Libya and efforts to advance the political process in the country.

Fahmy expressed his support for the UN's efforts in Libya, emphasizing the importance of Libya having full control over its political process. He also highlighted the need for enhanced coordination with regional organizations, such as the African Union and the Arab League, to achieve a lasting political solution in Libya.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported that Tetteh informed Fahmy about recent developments, including outcomes from the Smaller Convening and the next steps forward, along with recommendations from the UN-facilitated Structured Dialogue. Tetteh emphasized the importance of integrating the Structured Dialogue outcomes into collective efforts to create conditions conducive to holding elections in Libya within the next 24 months.

Tetteh has been intensifying her communications with Libyan parties, regional, and international partners to support UN-backed efforts aimed at advancing the political process, organizing elections, and resolving the country's political divisions. Libya's presidential and legislative elections, initially scheduled for December 2021, were postponed indefinitely due to political standoffs.
