Doha: The Arab League on Saturday emphasized the necessity of spreading a culture of dialogue and mutual understanding, pushing for an enhanced awareness of the importance of tolerance as a moral, humanitarian, and societal value. It reiterated its call to integrate the values of tolerance, dialogue, and coexistence into society's vision and institutional missions, recognizing tolerance as a bridge to a more secure, just, and humane future.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Arab League issued a statement on the occasion of the International Day for Tolerance, observed annually on November 16. The statement highlighted that tolerance is not merely a slogan but involves respecting others' rights to be different and viewing diversity as a source of cultural enrichment that fosters growth and prosperity. It emphasized that diversity forms a solid foundation for building true peace.
The statement further noted that this day arrives amidst a global increase in manifestations of intolerance, violence, and hate speech, underscoring the importance of promoting dialogue among cultures and civilizations. It called for initiatives that enhance respect for religious, cultural, and linguistic diversity while reinforcing the principles of justice and equality of rights and opportunities. The statement stressed the importance of educational, cultural, and media programs in instilling tolerance values in younger generations and strengthening their ability to reject extremism and closed-mindedness.
Additionally, the Arab League is working towards adopting the Arab Declaration on Tolerance and Peace, which serves as a guiding framework to support efforts in consolidating mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among peoples. This initiative is rooted in the League's understanding of the importance of building bridges of understanding and peaceful coexistence, strengthening communication among followers of different civilizations and cultures, and highlighting commonalities to foster continuous dialogue for peace and tolerance.
The International Day for Tolerance, celebrated on November 16 each year, aims to promote tolerance, understanding, and peaceful coexistence across diverse cultures and religions. Established by UNESCO in 1995, following the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance, the day seeks to maintain peaceful relations grounded in respect for cultural, ethnic, and religious differences.
