Belarusian President Secures New Term with Overwhelming Majority – Preliminary Results

Minsk: Incumbent Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko won a new term in the presidential election that took place Sunday, according to preliminary results on Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, preliminary data from the regional and Minsk city commissions indicated that Lukashenko secured 86.8% of the vote, as announced by the chairman of the Central Election Commission, Igor Karpenko, during a press conference.

First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Communist Party, Sergey Syrankov, received backing from 3% of the voters, Karpenko added.

Voters in Belarus participated in the election yesterday to choose a new president, with over 450 international observers from 49 countries overseeing the process. Five candidates, including incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, were registered for the presidential election.
