Canadian PM Announces Intention to Resign from Ruling Party Leadership

Doha: Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday his intention to resign from the leadership of the ruling party. Trudeau said in statements that he will remain in his position until the party chooses a replacement for him, adding “I will resign from the leadership of the Liberal Party (the ruling party) and the premiership, once the party chooses a new leader.” Trudeau’s announcement comes after nine years of assuming the leadership of the Canadian government, which has begun to face a lot of pressure in recent weeks, with the legislative elections approaching.

According to Qatar News Agency, the decision marks a significant shift in Canadian politics as Trudeau has been a prominent figure in the country’s leadership for nearly a decade. His leadership has been under scrutiny recently due to various challenges faced by the government, which might have influenced his decision to step down. The upcoming legislative elections have added to the urgency of establishing new leadership within the party.

Trudeau’s announcement is expected to trigger a leadership race within the Liberal Party, as members prepare to select a new leader who will guide them through the next phase of political challenges and opportunities. The timeline for this leadership transition remains crucial as the party strategizes for the forthcoming elections.
