Post: Carney Asserts Canada Won’t Seek Free Trade Agreement with China

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has made it clear that Canada has "no intention" of pursuing a free trade deal with China. "We have no intention of doing that with China or any other non-market economy," Carney stated to reporters on Sunday in Ottawa. He further explained, "What we've done with China is to rectify some issues that have developed in the last couple of years." According to Qatar News Agency, Carney emphasized that under the continental trade pact, known as CUSMA, Canada is restricted from pursuing free trade agreements with non-market economies-those more driven by government than market forces-without prior notification. Carney's statement follows a warning from US President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canada should it proceed with a trade deal with China.
