YINCHUAN: Chinese authorities have activated a level-4 disaster relief emergency response following a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Yongning County in Yinchuan, the capital of northwest China’s Ningxia Autonomous Region, on Thursday. The immediate response included the deployment of a working team to assist with local relief efforts in the affected areas.
According to Qatar News Agency, a 4.6-magnitude aftershock subsequently hit Yinchuan’s Jinfeng District, prompting further evacuations. Local sources reported that many residents sought safety in public squares, playgrounds, and other open areas following the aftershock. The initial earthquake led to the collapse of exterior walls in several older residential buildings, resulting in injuries to passersby and damage to several cultural relics.
Since 2024, Yinchuan has experienced at least seven tremors, with magnitudes ranging from 2.2 to 3.6. The recurring seismic activity has heightened concerns about structural vulnerabilities in the region and the potential for further damage. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, efforts are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents.
