Post: Day 2 of FISU World University Weightlifting Championship Sees Strong Performances in Doha

Doha: The second day of the 10th FISU World University Weightlifting Championship, hosted at Education City in Doha until September 12, saw participation from 116 male and female athletes representing 21 countries. This global university sporting event underscores Qatar's increasing role in hosting international championships. According to Qatar News Agency, the competition was fierce across the four weight categories at Education City, featuring the women's 57kg and 61kg categories and the men's 70kg and 75kg categories. In the women's 57kg category, Yi-Ci Juang from Chinese Taipei dominated with three gold medals, lifting 85kg in the snatch, 105kg in the clean and jerk, and achieving a total of 190kg. British athlete Asees Dhanda secured silver in all three categories, while Santiago Gutierrez from Puerto Rico took bronze. In the women's 61kg category, Yu-Ling Chiu from Chinese Taipei won two gold medals and one bronze. She claimed gold in the clean and jerk and overall categories, while Poland's Maria Po lka secured gold in the snatch. Alexandrine Genereux from Canada also showcased a strong performance, taking home silver and bronze medals. The men's 70kg category saw Moldova's Dan-Dorin Betca sweep all three golds with impressive lifts in the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall total. Lin Pao-Ti from Chinese Taipei earned silver, while Im Dohyeon from South Korea took bronze. In the men's 75kg category, South Korea's Seong-hyeon Hong excelled with two golds and a bronze. Hungary's Lajos Ujvari claimed gold in the snatch, while Poland's Michal Kosciuk earned two silver medals. Hamad Saleh Al Shiba, Head of Sports Programs at Qatar Foundation and a member of the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation, emphasized the significance of hosting the championship at Education City. He noted that the event highlights Qatar's capability to organize major international sports events, offering an exceptional experience for athletes and spectators. The championship will continue with competitions in the women's 69kg and men's 85kg categories. In total, the championship features 16 weight categories, showcasing Qatar's commitment to fostering international sports events.
