CAIRO: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati emphasized the necessity of establishing an independent Palestinian state during a meeting with Jonathan Powell, the British Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional issues, including the ongoing Palestinian conflict.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Egyptian Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of a just solution to the Palestinian issue, advocating for a state based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital. Abdel Aati also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and stressed the urgency of facilitating humanitarian aid to the region, condemning what he described as systematic violations by Israel that breach international conventions.
The talks also covered the situation in Syria, with Abdel Aati reiterating Egypt’s support for the Syrian people and the stability of the Syrian state. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive political transition owned by Syrians, free from external interference, to ensure the unity and stability of Syria.
In addition to discussions on Palestine and Syria, the meeting addressed recent developments in Sudan. Abdel Aati expressed Egypt’s commitment to advocating for a ceasefire and the swift delivery of humanitarian aid, while also supporting the empowerment of Sudan’s national institutions.
