Brussels: The European Union (EU) has affirmed the need to preserve Denmark's territorial integrity and sovereignty, following US President Donald Trump's announcement of the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the US Special Envoy to Greenland.
According to Qatar News Agency, the EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said in a statement Monday that maintaining the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and respecting its borders is fundamental to the EU, stressing that this position has been consistent for years.
For his part, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen announced that the ministry will summon the US ambassador to obtain clarification on the matter, deeming the US appointment "unacceptable."
The US president had previously affirmed that Jeff Landry understands the importance of Greenland to national security and will work to advance US interests.
