Doha: The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) and Doha Film Institute (DFI) have announced a new partnership that will introduce a FIPRESCI jury at the upcoming edition of the Doha Film Festival, scheduled for November 19-27, 2026.
According to Qatar News Agency, this collaboration unites two institutions dedicated to cinema as a medium for cultural exchange and critical dialogue. The Doha Film Festival (DFF), supported by 15 years of Doha Film Institute's dedication to authentic storytelling, serves as a dynamic platform for world cinema. It aims to inspire dialogue and reflection while nurturing regional talent, amplifying unheard voices, and deepening cultural understanding.
The festival is a vibrant hub for international cinema enthusiasts, showcasing powerful stories and serving as a launchpad for emerging voices in film. It features an international programme that brings together established filmmakers and emerging talents, highlighting the diversity and dynamism of contemporary world cinema.
DFF includes four main competition strands: International Feature Film Competition, International Short Film Competition, Ajyal Film Competition, and Made in Qatar Competition. These competitions spotlight distinctive cinematic voices and stories offering fresh perspectives on the rapidly changing world. The competition programme is complemented by an expansive out-of-competition selection and public programme, including gala screenings, talks, panels, family screenings, and community events, fostering engagement beyond the screen.
Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of Doha Film Institute and Festival Director of DFF, emphasized the importance of independent cinema and film criticism, stating that it ensures important films are understood, discussed, and preserved. She expressed delight in welcoming FIPRESCI to Doha, creating a space for critics and filmmakers to engage across cultures and contribute to a richer global conversation around cinema.
The festival is anchored in DFI's year-round efforts in supporting filmmakers through funding, training, and talent development, highlighting the Institute's commitment to helping distinctive voices from Qatar and beyond reach international audiences.
For FIPRESCI, the partnership signifies an important expansion of its international network, fostering meaningful encounters between critics, filmmakers, festivals, and audiences across diverse cultural and geographical contexts. FIPRESCI President Ahmed Shawky remarked on the significance of this exchange as part of its international mission, further strengthening the network and ensuring film criticism remains genuinely international.
The FIPRESCI DFF Jury will consist of three film critics who will evaluate films in the International Feature Film Competition.
