Doha: Heavy snowfall across large parts of the UK today has caused significant disruptions to travel. Airports including Leeds Bradford, Manchester, and Liverpool were forced to close their runways due to snow accumulation of around 16 inches, leading to flight delays and diversions. Passengers were advised to contact airlines before heading to the airports. Authorities at the affected airports warned that an “orange” weather alert is in effect for central and northern parts of the country due to snow and freezing rain. Birmingham Airport also temporarily closed its runway before reopening it this morning after clearing the snow. Passengers were reminded to check with airlines before heading to the airport.
According to Qatar News Agency, EasyJet issued an apology for the chaos at Bristol Airport, where passengers experienced significant delays in retrieving luggage due to snowstorm. The airline confirmed that steps were taken to help passengers on diverted flights continue their journeys by road. Several flights to Bristol were rerouted to alternative airports, and some flights to and from the airport were canceled after the runway was closed temporarily.
The UK Met Office issued additional weather warnings for the ongoing storm, which is bringing heavy snow and freezing rain to large areas of the country.
