Doha: Iraq's Federal Court decided Monday to dissolve the Council of Representatives (Parliament) and transform the government into a caretaker government. The court's decision marks a significant shift in the country's political landscape, as it redefines the roles and responsibilities of Iraq's governing bodies.
According to Qatar News Agency, the court stated in a document that the day of the general election for the new Council of Representatives signifies the end of the Council's term and its authority to legislate and oversee the performance of the executive branch. This move effectively curtails the legislative powers of the existing Council of Representatives, redirecting focus to the upcoming electoral process.
Furthermore, the powers of the Council of Ministers have been reduced from full authority to limited authority, restricting it to managing day-to-day affairs. This includes making decisions and taking actions that cannot be postponed, ensuring that essential governmental functions continue during this transitional period.
The Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq is scheduled to announce on Monday the final results of the parliamentary elections held on November 11, which saw a voter turnout exceeding 56 percent. This announcement is expected to provide clarity on the composition of the new Council of Representatives and set the stage for Iraq's political future.
