Tokyo: The Nikkei 225 index in Japan closed lower on Tuesday, affected by a stronger yen and profit-taking, after climbing past the 44,000-point mark earlier.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Nikkei rose 1.24% to a record high of 44,185.73 points before closing down 0.4% at 43,459.29, ending a three-day high streak. The broader TOPIX index also finished lower, dropping 0.5%.
Takeda Pharmaceutical, Japan's largest drugmaker, saw its shares fall 3%. Meanwhile, Citizen Watch shares dropped 5.5%, making it one of the biggest losers on the Nikkei.
On the upside, Advantest, a semiconductor testing equipment maker, surged 6.5% to a new record high, becoming one of the top gainers. Shares of chip equipment manufacturers Screen Holdings and Tokyo Electron rose 2.4% and 2%, respectively.
