Bishkek: Voters in Kyrgyzstan headed to the polls on Sunday to elect a new parliament, with the vote held ahead of schedule to avoid overlap with the presidential election planned for early 2027. Around 4.3 million eligible voters were able to cast their ballots at 2,492 polling stations across the country, as well as 100 overseas centers in 34 countries. By midday, turnout had reached 19%, slightly higher than at the same point in the 2021 parliamentary elections, with the election commission receiving about 20 complaints of alleged violations.
According to Qatar News Agency, the elections will choose 90 deputies under a new system of 30 multi-member constituencies, each electing three representatives based on a top three voting rule. A total of 460 candidates are competing. This vote follows the dissolution of parliament in September, after lawmakers unanimously agreed to end their term to allow for early elections and to separate legislative and presidential election timelines. Preliminary results are expected shortly after polls close at 8 pm local time, facilitated by electronic voting.
