Malaysian Prime Minister Highlights Qatar’s Role in Islamic and Global Peace Efforts

Kuala Lumpur: HE the Prime Minister of Malaysia Dr. Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the significance of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's visit to Malaysia for the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the 1st ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit, describing it as a high-level occasion showcasing the strong bilateral ties between Malaysia and Qatar. He commended His Highness for his esteemed position in the Islamic community and Qatar's active role in advancing global peace.

According to Qatar News Agency, in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of HH the Amir's visit, Dr. Anwar Ibrahim expressed his honor in receiving HH the Amir and conveyed his intention to enhance bilateral collaboration and economic investments. He highlighted the cordial and successful relations between the two nations, mentioning frequent exchanges through telephone discussions, meetings between various ministries, and regular ministerial-level visits, which reinforce the perception of Qatar as a great friend of Malaysia.

On regional matters, the Malaysian Prime Minister emphasized the high regard Qatar holds within the Islamic world, particularly for its stance on issues affecting the Ummah, such as the Palestinian cause. He praised Qatar's continuous efforts to achieve peace and ceasefire in Gaza and its recognition of the State of Palestine, which is appreciated by many Muslims, including Malaysians.

Dr. Anwar Ibrahim also lauded Qatar's success in hosting global events, notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which he said garnered worldwide admiration. He discussed the cooperation between ASEAN and the GCC, highlighting an unprecedented forum being hosted in Malaysia that brings together ASEAN and Gulf countries, acknowledging HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and GCC leaders for their support.

He noted the importance of strategic partnerships with major powers and mentioned an initiative involving Malaysia, ASEAN, and the GCC. He pointed out China's integral role in this partnership, advocating for a trilateral summit with ASEAN, the Gulf, and China. He also mentioned strong relations with the United States, Europe, India, and Japan, with plans for future meetings.

In terms of Malaysia's foreign policy, Dr. Anwar Ibrahim reiterated the country's commitment to neutrality and full independence, emphasizing centrality and cooperation with all nations. He remarked on the benefits of China's participation in the ASEAN summit and stressed the importance of cooperation through mutual understanding.

He concluded by acknowledging Qatar's efforts in mediating a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, highlighting Qatar's pivotal role in these challenging times and the need for Palestinian involvement in negotiations. Dr. Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his support for Qatar's peace efforts, condemning violence against civilians, and rejecting occupation, expressing gratitude to His Highness the Amir for his contributions to conflict resolution.
