Doha: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that despite recent tensions, the United States remains open to pursuing diplomatic solutions with Iran. Rubio's comments came after Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz, which he claimed have effectively nullified a memorandum of understanding aimed at keeping the vital waterway open and free from attacks on commercial shipping.
According to Qatar News Agency, Rubio addressed the media at Joint Base Andrews before his departure for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in the Philippines. He expressed concerns about Iran's non-compliance with the memorandum, questioning the viability of the agreement under current circumstances. Rubio emphasized that any change in US policy would be contingent upon a change in Iran's behavior, reiterating Washington's ongoing willingness to engage in diplomacy.
Rubio also underscored the importance of maintaining pressure on Iran to prevent any attempts to obstruct the Strait of Hormuz. He warned of the severe economic repercussions that could result from disruptions to navigation in this critical passage. Furthermore, Rubio affirmed the US commitment to safeguarding international navigation and outlined the current strategy of applying maximum economic and military pressure while keeping diplomatic channels open.
The US resumed military strikes against Iran on July 12, following the breakdown of a temporary ceasefire agreement that had been established in April.
