The Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC) sponsored the Listed Qatar Racing And Equestrian Club Curragh Stakes at the Curragh, Ireland on Saturday, 13 August. The black-type event over for two-year-old Thoroughbreds was landed by the rapidly progressing sort, the Elenore Kennedy-owned juvenile, Mauiewowie (Night Of Thunder x La Chapelle), who was a narrow winner of the 1,000 metres contest.
Trained by Ger Lyons and ridden by leading jockey Colin Keane, the March born filly has enjoyed formidable six weeks, having made a winning debut at Naas on 2 July. Beaten just over a length at Listed level in her second start, Mauiewowie showed plenty of speed in her third career start and added a first Listed success to her CV.
Smartly away for seven-runner contest, Mauiewowie was never far off the early pace and moved up menacingly to lead inside the final 400m. Joined by Treasure Trove (Siyouni) inside the closing stages, the winner showed plenty of courage and held on to score by a short head. The former French recruit, Funny Money Honey (Bungle Inthejiungle) took third.
Bred by Treblas Halford Farm Thoroughbreds, Mauiewowie was an expensive yearling purchase and was knocked down to Amanda Skiffington and Pegasus Bloodstock for €155,000 at Tattersalls Yearling Sale (Book 1) in 2021.
Out of La Chapelle, Mauiewowie is a sister to three-time winner and Listed placed Something Enticing (Fascinating Rock) and is from the granddaughter of the Gr.1 winner Nightime (Galileo). An extremely successful broodmare, Nightime has produced six individual winners, including the champion Ghaiyyath (Dubawi).
