Meta: Meta has launched a new open-weight artificial intelligence model called Muse Glimmer, allowing developers to download and modify it freely. The model is small in size and can run locally on a personal computer or Mac using a single graphics card, extending its capabilities beyond mere instruction execution to encompass more advanced tasks such as planning.
According to Qatar News Agency, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called on the US administration to ease restrictions on training data for open-source models. He warned that current restrictions provide significant competitive advantages to foreign laboratories, particularly those in China. Zuckerberg emphasized that restricting access to foreign models is not a viable solution and advocated for supporting American models to enable them to lead the global AI race.
Open-weight models like Muse Glimmer offer developers more flexible and cost-effective alternatives to closed systems that are tightly controlled by companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. This initiative is seen as a strategic move to enhance Meta's competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The launch of Muse Glimmer comes at a time when Chinese companies, including Moonshot AI with its Kimi K3 model, Alibaba's Qwen with Qwen 3.8-Max, and DeepSeek with DeepSeek-V4-Flash, are leading the charge in the field. These companies are offering open models that rival some of the leading closed American systems in terms of performance, further intensifying the global competition in AI innovation.
