Post: Mexican Craft Takes Centre Stage in Doha’s Cultural Events

Doha:Mexican craft is taking centre stage across Doha this fall with a series of exhibitions, design collaborations, and culinary experiences. These events aim to explore how traditional skills passed down through generations continue to influence contemporary life. This initiative is part of the Qatar, Canada, and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, which introduces audiences to the individuals, materials, and ideas behind these creative works.

According to Qatar News Agency, the program highlights how makers in both Mexico and Qatar are finding new applications for traditional techniques by merging cultural heritage with modern lifestyles. A key exhibition, "Expanded Tradition Contemporary Craft Practices in Mexico," will be showcased at M7 from October 27 to December 26, 2026. Curated by Ana Elena Mallet, it features 106 works by 26 makers and collectives from 12 Mexican states.

At the MIHAD Gallery in the Doha Design District, craft becomes integral to the experience of sharing a meal. From November 5 to 15, 2026, Mexican chef Elena Reygadas will lead Panadería Rosetta’s residency, marking its first in the city. The Mexico City bakery's offerings will be paired with handmade ceramics and lighting by Mexican designer Perla Valtierra, creating a unique dining atmosphere.

Visitors to Doha can also experience "The Sower," an installation by Laposse at Fareej Al Asmakh, curated by Mario Ballesteros. This artwork is divided into three parts and uses pearls and cochineal to symbolize the past, representing natural resources and ancestral knowledge that historically linked Qatar and Mexico to world trade. The exhibition is part of the Design Doha Biennale, running from November 5, 2026, to January 31, 2027.

The Years of Culture partner-year model emphasizes cultural exchange, with Mexico offering Qatar a reflective comparison. Both countries boast crafts influenced by challenging landscapes, family traditions, and trade practices.
