Post: Municipality Ministry to Launch New Season for Agricultural Produce Markets

Doha:The Ministry of Municipality, through its Agricultural Affairs Department, is set to kick off the 2026-2027 local agricultural produce market season this Thursday. The launch will occur at four seasonal yards located in Al Khor and Al Thakhira, Al Wakrah, Al Shamal, and Al Shahaniya, with Al Mazrouah Yard continuing to receive visitors throughout the year.

According to Qatar News Agency, the ministry emphasized that this new season forms part of its ongoing efforts to support Qatari farms. The initiative aims to enhance the marketing of domestic agricultural produce by providing direct sales outlets that allow farmers to present their products to consumers, thereby increasing marketing opportunities and encouraging local production.

The markets will be open to visitors on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring participation from over 240 Qatari farms. These farms will offer a wide variety of fresh local agricultural produce. The local produce markets are key initiatives by the ministry to support the agricultural sector by offering direct marketing channels between farmers and consumers, eliminating intermediaries, and boosting economic returns for farm owners while providing fresh, high-quality national products at competitive prices.

These markets will feature a range of homegrown produce, primarily seasonal vegetables, natural honey, and dates, along with other products available According to agricultural seasons. This reflects the diversity of agricultural production in Qatar. The ministry is dedicated to ensuring an ideal purchasing environment for the public, with markets equipped with essential facilities, including shade structures and public amenities. Professional surveillance teams will monitor the quality of products to ensure they meet approved standards.

Since the initiative's inception in the 2012-2013 season, starting with a single market in Al Mazrouah involving 24 farms and generating approximately 850 tonnes of agricultural produce sales, the markets have seen significant growth. The 2025-2026 season involved 236 farms and nearly 12,000 tonnes in total sales, illustrating the markets' importance in supporting Qatari farmers and contributing to the national food security system.

The ministry has affirmed its commitment to advancing homegrown agricultural markets and their marketing and economic roles, aligning with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Food Security Strategy, to support sustainability in the agricultural sector and increase reliance on national products.
