The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) announced Sunday that Scottish tennis player Andy Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, will miss this year’s tournament following back surgery.
“After an operation on a spinal cyst, Andy Murray is sadly out of Wimbledon,” the ATP said in statement. “Rest up and recover Andy, we’ll miss seeing you there.” Murray recently withdrew from the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships during his match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson due to injury, trailing 1-4 in the first set.
The Scottish player, who has won two Olympic gold medals, previously indicated that he is unlikely to continue playing next season, suggesting that Wimbledon or the Paris 2024 Olympics would be a fitting end to his illustrious career.
Wimbledon is scheduled to take place from July 1 to 14, while the tennis events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will begin on July 27.
