NHRC Chairperson Meets Arab Parliament President to Discuss AI and Human Rights

Doha: HE Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah met with HE President of the Arab Parliament Mohamed Ahmed Al Yammahi. The meeting focused on the key outcomes of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: "Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future," hosted by the State of Qatar, which saw extensive participation from specialized international and regional organizations.

According to Qatar News Agency, NHRC issued a statement highlighting the discussions during the meeting. HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah expressed her deep appreciation for the Arab Parliament's involvement in the conference's opening, viewing it as a testament to the parliament's commitment to supporting the human rights system and enhancing collaborations with related national institutions.

Al Attiyah underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships among Arab parliaments and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs). She emphasized the need for integrating both entities' roles to advance the Arab human rights agenda. To this end, she proposed establishing a joint framework for an annual forum, alongside organizing courses, workshops, and seminars, and fostering institutional interactions with United Nations and European Union mechanisms on issues of mutual interest.

HE Mohamed Ahmed Al Yammahi commended NHRC for successfully organizing the conference, which attracted over 1,200 participants globally, underscoring international confidence in Qatar's initiatives. He expressed optimism that the conference's outcomes would significantly contribute to the global dialogue on human rights in the age of artificial intelligence.

Al Yammahi also mentioned the forthcoming signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Arab Parliament and NHRC, aimed at bolstering institutional cooperation and sharing expertise.
