BAGHDAD: A person was killed and more than 70 others were injured during New Year celebrations in Baghdad, where fireworks and live ammunition were used in various areas of the Iraqi capital.
According to Qatar News Agency, an Iraqi security source reported that the fatality occurred in the Dora area of southern Baghdad, where a celebrant’s gunshots fired into the air led to one person’s death. In addition to the fatal incident, Iraqi medical sources indicated that over 70 individuals sustained injuries of varying severity due to the widespread use of fireworks and live ammunition.
The Iraqi authorities had previously issued warnings urging citizens to refrain from firing live ammunition, highlighting the potential for harm and human casualties. In response to the dangers posed by these activities, security forces conducted a special campaign, resulting in the confiscation of over 20 firearms used during the celebrations and the arrest of their owners.
