Nagoya:Qatar: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has celebrated the success of its national 3x3 basketball team, which secured a silver medal at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026. This achievement marks the team's second consecutive runner-up finish in the event.
According to Qatar News Agency, QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaisib commended the team's performance upon their arrival at Hamad International Airport. He emphasized that the result highlights the progress of Qatari basketball and the national team's capability to compete at the highest level in Asia. The team's success was attributed to the strong support for Qatari sports and the players' impressive performances during the tournament.
Qatar's journey to the final involved winning five consecutive games, ultimately facing South Korea in the final match, where they were defeated 19-10. Al Mughaisib noted that reaching the final for the second consecutive Asian Games is a significant milestone for Qatari basketball, offering momentum as the country prepares to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2027.
In addition to praising the players, Al Mughaisib also acknowledged the efforts of the Federation's technical and administrative teams, which have contributed to the growth of 3x3 basketball in Qatar and its presence in major continental competitions.
Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, QBF Secretary-General and National Teams Director, further highlighted the team's progress, noting their strong campaign from the beginning of the tournament. Qatar topped its group, overcame Mongolia in the quarter-finals, and defeated Iran in the semi-finals to advance to the gold-medal game.
While the team aimed for gold, Al Kuwari stated that the silver medal was a significant achievement considering the competitive nature of the Asian field. He praised the players, coaching staff, and administrative team for their efforts and expressed confidence in building on this experience for future challenges.
Meanwhile, Qatar 3x3 National Teams Director Yassin Ismail lauded the players for their consistency and composure under pressure throughout the tournament. He emphasized that the consecutive silver medals would serve as motivation for further development and success in upcoming competitions.
