Qatar and ASEAN: A Model for Comprehensive Partnership

Doha: Qatari newspapers on Friday delved into a spectrum of local and Arab issues, with particular emphasis on the burgeoning partnership between the State of Qatar and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Editorials highlighted how HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's participation in the upcoming second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit in Malaysia, scheduled for May 2025, signifies a mutual commitment to bolstering this partnership and marks a pivotal moment in Qatar-ASEAN relations.

According to Qatar News Agency, the newspapers underscored Qatar's significant role in supporting less affluent nations, combating poverty, and fostering international humanitarian solidarity. Locally, the media spotlight was on the role of the press in safeguarding society and encouraging positive behavior. This was exemplified by the newly announced collaboration between Qatar Media Corporation, represented by Qatar TV, and the Behavioral Health Support Center, which aims to enhance preventive media efforts and reinforce positive societal values.

On matters of Arab affairs, the newspapers denounced the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip and criticized the international community for its lack of action. Al-Raya, in its editorial titled "Qatar and ASEAN: A Model for Comprehensive Partnership," noted ASEAN's dedication to strengthening political and economic ties with Qatar. The publication highlighted Qatar's robust relations with Asian nations, which have been fortified through its membership in Asian blocs and its active cooperation with various regional and international organizations across the continent.

Al-Raya emphasized that Qatar's success in building solid partnerships with Asian countries, particularly ASEAN, is not only through supporting joint projects but also through fostering sustainable development. The newspaper pointed out that since Qatar's accession to the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in August 2022, its relations with ASEAN have gained new momentum, making significant progress in consolidating cooperation in diverse fields and supporting efforts to promote regional and international peace and security.

In a similar context, Al-Sharq, under the title "Qatar and ASEAN: Keenness to Strengthen Cooperation and Partnership," noted that Qatar-ASEAN relations have experienced steady growth politically and economically over the past year. The newspaper explained that Qatar has emerged as a dependable political partner and an active supporter of regional integration among ASEAN countries. Additionally, Qatar is recognized as a major economic partner and one of the most prominent investors in ASEAN countries, with extensive strategic investments in crucial sectors.

Al-Sharq concluded by highlighting the strong political will of leaders and the mutual visits at the highest levels, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation. The paper emphasized the vision of both sides for a more integrated and prosperous future that achieves their common interests and meets the aspirations of their peoples.
