Cairo: The State of Qatar took part in the 29th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information, convened in Cairo on Thursday. The Qatari delegation was led by Sami Mohammed Al Shammari, the Assistant Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Operations Affairs at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Shammari expressed that Qatar's involvement is aimed at enhancing partnerships and expanding joint Arab cooperation in communications and information technology. He highlighted the necessity for unified efforts and visions in the rapidly evolving landscape of information and communications technology and artificial intelligence. Al Shammari emphasized Qatar's progress in this sector and its willingness to share expertise and develop partnerships with other Arab nations. He also mentioned that regional and global alignment in information technology is crucial, starting with coordinated efforts at the Arab level to unify positions in regional forums.
Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States, HE Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al Malki, also shared insights with QNA. He stated that the meeting covered various issues related to communications technology, information technology, and postal services. One key outcome was the establishment of a Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies as a permanent body under the Council. Additionally, the session adopted the Arab Ethical Charter for Artificial Intelligence, which serves as a guiding framework for Arab states.
Dr. Al Malki highlighted discussions on key challenges in the communications sector, achievements from the previous period, and other relevant topics. A notable achievement was granting the State of Palestine full membership in the Universal Postal Union and raising the Palestinian flag at the Union for the first time.
