Qatar Engages in Key Climate Discussions at UNFCCC Bonn Meetings

Doha: The State of Qatar took part in the 64th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body meetings in Bonn, Germany. This participation is part of the preparations for the upcoming 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), which is set to convene in Antalya, Turkiye, in November.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari delegation was led by Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), Eng. Ahmad Mohammed Al Sada, and included various government agencies. The delegation engaged in official sessions, technical consultations, and meetings of negotiating groups to discuss critical issues such as the implementation of the Paris Agreement, adaptation strategies for climate change impacts, climate transparency, and financial support for developing countries. They also focused on the transfer of modern technologies, capacity building, and the training of national cadres.

The meetings addressed the support needed by countries to implement their climate plans and enhance international cooperation on climate challenges. Discussions included several issues scheduled for presentation at COP31. Participants underscored the significance of achieving practical and balanced outcomes that consider countries' circumstances and capacities, furthering the implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.

The principle of equity and common responsibilities was highlighted, emphasizing the need to account for varying national capabilities and circumstances. Additionally, the necessary support for developing countries to execute their climate plans and attain development goals was stressed. The Bonn meetings serve as a pivotal moment in international climate negotiations, offering a platform for technical discussions and fostering consensus among countries ahead of COP31.
