Post: Qatar Reaffirms Commitment to Doha Programme for Least Developed Countries

New York:The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with the United Nations and other partners to expedite the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries (2022-2031), which serves as a global roadmap for sustainable development in these nations.

According to Qatar News Agency, this commitment was articulated by Abdulaziz Yousef Jolo, a member of the Qatari delegation, during the Second Committee's meetings of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The focus was on Agenda Item 20, concerning Groups of Countries in Special Situations.

Jolo emphasized that the Doha Programme of Action is at a critical stage due to increasing challenges such as debt, development financing, food security, climate change, and conflict. Qatar remains steadfast in supporting least developed countries (LDCs) to achieve sustainable development. Qatar hosted the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in March 2023, where it committed $60 million to support the programme's implementation and outcomes.

He further detailed Qatar's efforts to translate its commitments into practical actions. In September 2025, the Qatar Fund for Development signed two agreements totaling $21 million with the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS). These agreements are aimed at establishing a food storage mechanism for LDCs and enhancing their resilience, with $10 million allocated to support the Office in executing the Doha Programme of Action.

Jolo also highlighted the upcoming high-level meeting on Global Partnerships for the Sustainable and Resilient Graduation of Least Developed Countries, set for December 2025 in partnership with UN-OHRLLS. He emphasized that graduating from the LDC category should mark a sustainable development transition.

Preparations are underway for the midterm review of the Doha Programme of Action, scheduled in Doha from March 25 to 27, 2027, as per UN General Assembly Resolution 80/150. Jolo stated that this review is a significant international milestone to assess progress, identify gaps, renew commitments, and agree on measures for the second half of the programme's implementation.

He concluded by stressing that the success of the Doha Programme of Action is a collective responsibility demanding renewed international solidarity and ambitious partnerships to help LDCs overcome structural challenges and build resilience.
