Doha: The State of Qatar has secured the right to host the electoral general assembly of the Asian Weightlifting Federation in December, following a vote held during the federation's executive board meeting on the sidelines of the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 in India. According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari bid defeated Singapore after Iran and the Maldives withdrew from the race, further reinforcing Qatar's growing reputation as a leading destination for major international sporting events. The assembly will take place alongside the Qatar International Weightlifting Cup from December 7 to 17, a key qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding major technical and organizational significance to the gathering. The meeting was chaired by HE First Vice President of Qatar Olympic Committee Mohammed Yousef Al Mana, who said the victory is a reflection of the confidence Asian sports bodies place in Qatar's world-class hosting capabilities and organizational excellence. He stressed that staging the electoral congress alongside an Olympic qualifier marks a major step for the development of weightlifting across Asia and highlights Qatar's expanding influence on the international sporting stage.
