Post: Qatar-UK Economic Partnership Emphasized by London’s Lady Mayor

Doha:The economic partnership between Qatar and the United Kingdom is described as "strong, trusted and built for the long term" by Dame Susan Langley, the Lady Mayor of the City of London.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dame Susan Langley, during her first visit to Doha, aims to transform the historic relationship into practical opportunities. Her focus is on connecting Qatari investors with credible UK projects and assisting British firms in forming partnerships in Qatar, especially in finance, technology, infrastructure, and sustainable growth.

Langley highlighted the mutual benefits of this partnership, noting Qatari investment's support for key sectors in the UK and British expertise's contribution to Qatar's growth. She extended an invitation to Qatari investors to deepen their commitment, assuring them that the UK provides a secure, transparent environment for sustainable investment, with London offering reliable regulation, deep markets, and top-notch professional advice.

She further elaborated on how London could support Qatar's development priorities by linking Qatari entities with capital, expert advice, and global partners. London's proficiency in fields such as investment, insurance, and technology is seen as pivotal in financing new industries and supporting international business expansion.

Langley sees potential for collaboration in green growth, FinTech, and Islamic finance. She mentioned that London could assist in raising private capital for green infrastructure projects and support Qatari companies in the FinTech sector. London's status as a leading Islamic finance center offers additional opportunities to expand the sukuk market and attract diversified investors.

Regarding the GCC-UK free trade agreement, Langley noted that its implementation would simplify trade, reduce barriers, and enhance service and digital trade access. This is particularly significant for SMEs in Qatar and the UK, enabling them to navigate market complexities more easily and fostering confidence to export and invest.

Langley also discussed new UK initiatives, such as InvestConnect, which will facilitate the discovery and comparison of UK investment opportunities, and the Office for Investment Financial Services, which provides investors with a direct point of contact and specialized support.

Addressing competition among global financial centers, Langley acknowledged its benefits but emphasized London's unique advantages, including a comprehensive financial ecosystem, international reach, and strong global connections. This positions London as an attractive long-term base for Qatari investors.

In conclusion, Langley expressed her hope that her visit would strengthen investment pipelines and foster enduring links between institutions and businesses in London and Doha. She envisions a future where both cities are even closer partners in finance, technology, and sustainable growth, with increased joint investments and robust business connections.
