Qatar’s Diplomatic Efforts Lead to Historic Peace Agreement Between Congo and Rwanda

Doha: The signing of a peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, facilitated by the United States in Washington, has been hailed as a significant achievement in regional and international diplomacy. This milestone was marked by the efforts of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, notably through the hosting of a trilateral meeting in Doha in March with HE President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and HE President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to Qatar News Agency, Al-Sharq daily emphasized that the peace agreement represents an important step towards de-escalation and establishing peace and stability in eastern Congo and the Great Lakes region. The agreement is seen as a prominent example of the strategic partnership and joint efforts between Qatar and the United States to bring peace to the region and resolve disputes through diplomatic means.

Al-Sharq further noted that this agreement continues the Qatari-US efforts on various fronts, including the Afghan file, de-escalation between Iran and Israel, and ongoing mediation to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Al-Watan newspaper highlighted Qatar's foreign policy, which prioritizes resolving conflicts through peaceful means, dialogue, and mediation, as a constitutional commitment to strengthening international security.

The remarks of US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during her meeting with HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, praised Qatar's mediation role, culminating in the agreements between Rwanda and the DRC, and Iran and Israel, in cooperation with the United States.

In conclusion, Al-Watan expressed hope for the success of joint mediation efforts in reaching an agreement in the Gaza Strip for the exchange of prisoners and a permanent ceasefire, along with substantial humanitarian aid delivery to Palestinians.

In another development, The Peninsula reported the successful conclusion of the 2024/2025 season at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC), enhancing Qatar's global standing in horse racing and equestrian sport. The season, spanning November to May, featured 555 races over 78 race days and showcased increased international participation, exceptional organization, and a total prize money exceeding QR88 million. The paper concluded that the upcoming season is expected to offer even more thrilling action as QREC continues to elevate its standards.
