Qatar’s Pioneering Role in Counter-Terrorism Highlighted at UN Briefing.

New York: The National Counter Terrorism Committee of the State of Qatar recently briefed the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) on its significant achievements in combating terrorism. As the first nation in its region and the 12th globally to present such a briefing, Qatar underscored its dedication to transparency and international cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts. According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, emphasized Qatar's commitment to actively engage in global counter-terrorism initiatives. She reiterated the nation's strong support for the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and other relevant UN bodies, highlighting Qatar's proactive role in addressing global threats. During the meeting, His Excellency Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab, detailed Qatar's comprehensive approach to combat ing terrorism. He outlined the country's efforts in developing national legislation, enhancing both international and regional cooperation, and supporting initiatives aimed at addressing terrorism's root causes, such as poverty and unemployment. Educational and cultural initiatives promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence were also highlighted as part of Qatar's strategy. Ambassador Al Hanzab also pointed out the effective measures taken by Qatar, such as strengthening financial oversight and implementing strict standards to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism. These efforts reflect Qatar's dedication to eradicating financial networks that support terrorist activities. HE Executive Director of CTED, Natalia Gherman, praised Qatar's commitment to implementing the Committee's recommendations and tackling emerging threats. She acknowledged Qatar's active engagement with CTED and its role in international counter-terrorism efforts. Members of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Com mittee expressed their appreciation for Qatar's briefing and commended the nation for its proactive measures. The National Counter Terrorism Committee took the opportunity to showcase Qatar's successful security measures during major events, specifically referencing the secure hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
