Qatar’s Role in Gaza Ceasefire and Peace Efforts Highlighted by Local Newspapers

Doha: Local newspapers in Qatar have underscored the significant role played by the State of Qatar in international efforts to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Al Sharq newspaper emphasized Qatar's participation as a key partner in the mediation process led by US President Donald Trump, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement and the establishment of the Council of Peace. This council, announced by President Trump in January 2026, is tasked with managing post-war Gaza affairs.

According to Qatar News Agency, Al Sharq highlighted the repeated commendations by the US president for Qatar's efforts and contributions to the ceasefire, viewing it as a testament to international confidence in Qatari mediation. The paper also noted the respect commanded by Qatari leadership on both regional and international fronts. Al Sharq reiterated Qatar's support for the Peace Council, citing its belief in the council's potential to achieve a just and comprehensive solution that aligns with the aspirations of the Palestinian people for an independent state and ensures regional security and stability.

In parallel, Al Arab newspaper acknowledged Qatar's pledge of one billion US dollars to support the Peace Council's mission in Gaza. This commitment, announced by HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs during the council's first meeting at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, underscores Qatar's dedication to fostering peace, dialogue, and stability both regionally and globally. The editorial noted Qatar's consistent diplomacy based on dialogue and humanitarian values, which aims to bridge divisions and create opportunities for peaceful resolutions.

The newspaper further explained that the Peace Council's responsibilities include overseeing Gaza's transitional phase, coordinating reconstruction efforts, providing financial support, contributing to transitional security arrangements, and deploying an international stabilization force. These efforts are part of a broader political path toward regional peace. Al Arab expressed hope that these initiatives would pave the way for peace and stability in the Gaza Strip.

On another note, The Peninsula, an English-language newspaper, focused on the challenging conditions faced by Palestinians in Gaza amidst ongoing hostilities. It highlighted the severe impact of the conflict on daily life, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. The newspaper described how the siege, bombardment, and destruction have forced many residents into overcrowded shelters and makeshift tents, with traditional Ramadan practices significantly disrupted.

The editorial noted that life in Gaza has been profoundly altered, with scarcity of food and basic necessities turning daily survival into a struggle. It remarked on how the repeated bombardment and siege over the past four years have reshaped life in Gaza, turning ordinary activities into aspirations of endurance and resilience for its residents.
