Doha: The Tobacco Control Center at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar is making notable strides in its mission to reduce smoking prevalence and promote public health through innovative approaches and international collaborations.
According to Qatar News Agency, the center, which is recognized by the World Health Organization as a collaborating center, has been at the forefront of tobacco control in the Gulf region since its inception in 1999. Initially established as a specialized clinic, it evolved into a tobacco control unit in 2017 and later became the Tobacco Control Center. This evolution reflects global confidence in Qatar's efforts in tobacco control, and the center's accreditation by WHO is a testament to its pioneering role.
Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Mulla, the Director of the Tobacco Control Center, highlighted the center's achievements, including a reduction in smoking prevalence from 36% to 25% as per a 2021 study. The center expanded its network of clinics across the country, enhancing access to smoking cessation services. These clinics are strategically located in various hospitals, ensuring broad-scale service availability.
The center's treatment methodology focuses on both medical and psychological support. It offers internationally approved medications and counseling to assist individuals in quitting smoking. Dr. Al Mulla emphasized the collaborative nature of tobacco control, underscoring the shared responsibility of families, educational institutions, and government bodies.
Dr. Jaafar Mahmoud, a smoking cessation specialist at the center, outlined the center's four main pillars: scientific research, awareness and education, medical support, and policy implementation. The center also facilitates access to services through platforms like WhatsApp, enabling individuals to seek help conveniently.
The center's future plans include launching mobile clinics to reach underserved populations and continuing to provide comprehensive support for those aiming to quit smoking. Notably, the center's efforts have been recognized with the World Health Organization's World No Tobacco Day Award for its role in ensuring a smoke-free FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
