Doha: The Qur'anic Botanic Garden (QBG), a member of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has announced the distribution of 5,000 trees and native wild plants over the past two months. This initiative is part of QBG's ambitious programme to propagate common Qatari wild species, aiming to enhance vegetation cover and conserve local plant species.
According to Qatar News Agency, the distributed species include sidr, samar, ghaf, qurt, neem, and luban, all cultivated in QBG's nurseries using precise scientific technologies. This effort seeks to preserve Qatar's plant genetic resources as a national trust and ensure sustainable propagation for future generations.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) was a main beneficiary of the program, as collaboration between QBG and MECC continues to support national afforestation projects and restore Qatar's rangelands. Mazzraty Company also received several trees to plant in production areas to enhance biodiversity, along with schools, municipalities, and other national institutions.
This initiative is part of QBG's broader campaign to plant and distribute 2.5 million trees during the current decade, in collaboration with Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS). It aligns with Qatar's commitment to planting 10 million trees as part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, promoting environmental protection and climate change mitigation.
Director of QBG, Fatima Saleh M. Al Khulaifi, emphasized the importance of environmental protection as both an institutional and individual responsibility. She stated that the tree distribution serves as a practical call to action for reviving Qatar's natural landscapes and preserving its environmental heritage for future generations.
QBG continues to expand the propagation of wild and domesticated plants in Qatar through its nurseries and scientific programs. It remains dedicated to expanding Qatar's green cover and raising environmental awareness, guided by Qur'anic values, while serving as a global center for knowledge sharing, education, and research related to plant resources.
The Garden's mission aligns with the objectives of Qatar Foundation and the Qatar National Vision 2030, integrating plant conservation with modern scientific methods and promoting environmental sustainability in line with international standards.
