Kuala lumpur: The Shura Council took part in a three-day parliamentary conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the theme "The Role of Parliaments in Shaping the Future of Responsible Artificial Intelligence." The event was jointly organized by the Malaysian House of Representatives, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the UN Development Programme, and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Abdulla bin Jaber Al Lebdah and HE Mohammed bin Omar Al Mannai, Shura Council members, represented the council at the conference. Participants engaged in discussions on various aspects of artificial intelligence development, including its societal impact, economic implications, and the creation of regulatory and legislative frameworks for its safe and responsible application.
The conference addressed issues such as digital governance, privacy and data protection, and emphasized the role of parliaments in oversight, bridging the digital divide, and bolstering public trust. The need for international collaboration and unified standards to tackle cross-border challenges was also highlighted.
In their concluding statement, participants stressed the urgency of global AI regulation to ensure responsible use, prevent monopolization, and avoid misuse that could erode institutional trust. They called for expedited legislative efforts and oversight, alignment of laws with international norms, enhanced transparency, governance, and data protection. The statement also emphasized building parliamentary capacities, initiating national discussions and ethical frameworks, enhancing public awareness, forming specialized regulatory bodies, and fostering international cooperation to share expertise.
